Artist Statement Hello, let me introduce myself. I am a wildlife, landscape and seascape artist who currently goes by the name Brenda Acosta. I have been interested in drawing and painting for as long as I can remember. I took my first real professional art painting class when I was 12 years old. I grew up in Lufkin, a town in Deep East Texas as Brenda Bishop. I had plenty of beautiful landscape and animal life sources to inspire me along my artist journey.
In Junior High and High School, I was fortunate enough to have some wonderful art teachers who were a constant encouragement for me. In Junior High I had Mr. Kimball who was an amazing artist and teacher. In High School I had Mrs. York who taught me the value of art and appreciation for different styles and mediums. All throughout my high school years I excelled in art and academics, but art was my passion. I had the honor of being awarded many 1st place art ribbons and awards including six from the Houston Livestock Rodeo. My senior year I shared the distinct honor of being named Artist of the Year, with a fellow student.
I married Scott May a couple years after graduation and started a family. However, upon entering the job market, I tried to find jobs geared toward art. One of my first artist jobs was for a local art store that goes by the name Grizzly’s Arts and Crafts, the owners Sharon and Grizzly Adams. They were a great inspiration to me, always encouraging me to develop as an artist. There I learned many techniques and painting mediums, such as toll painting, fabric painting, acrylic painting and others. I worked for them for many years and learned so much as they were both amazing artists and craftsmen.
The second artistic career I found was doing custom picture framing for a local glass shop. I worked there for a little over 15 years. During my career I worked closely with local Interior Decorators and Designers, to frame a variety of unique and sometimes odd pieces of art. I was a well-known artist of Professional Picture Framing until my then husband moved our little family away to Ontario Oregon in 2001. I drew and painted many things throughout the years while married to Mr. May, thus some of my art is under my maiden’s name, some under my married name May. In 2018 we divorced and I met and married my soul mate Tony Acosta in June of 2020. Tony has been an inspiration to me, and encourages me every day to be the artist that I am. I have produced more art since marrying him than any other time in my life. Tony and I are both art lovers, and outdoor people. We love beautiful scenery and take frequent drives on scenic byways to discover beautiful places and take tons of pictures. Many of my works are by memory of places I have been, some by photographs I have taken or family members have taken. Some works I just make up as I go.
What I would like to have people take away when they see or purchase one of my pieces of work is happiness and an appreciation for the beauty that God has created for us here on earth. Like some artist work touch my soul, I hope that mine can touch many souls and bring them happiness.
