For me, painting is the product of my life experiences. What I am and what I believe and care about is what I put on canvas. Normally, I paint in a series so in the beginning, I am usually only conscious of that. I always have a general idea of subject and I usually know what I want to say but let the creative process tell me how to say it. Once I have the general theme arranged, then I spend a great deal of time working with technique, making sure the composition is sound. Sometimes after many layers and changes it starts to pull itself together; then I am able to go forward and finish the work.
