Artist Statement Andy Kalns was born in Oldenburg, Germany and grew up in northern Ohio. After serving in The U.S. Navy he graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Art with a BFA degree in Industrial Design and minors in Painting and Graphics Design. He worked as an Industrial Designer for Clark Equipment Co, Fisher Price, Playskool, Hasbro, Tomy and as a shoe designer for Kaepa, Champion, Caterpillar, R.J. Colt and New Life Shoes.

After living in various parts of the country Andy and his family settled in San Antonio, Texas where he set up a design studio and office and founded Andy Kalns Design offering design and illustration services to various clients nationwide. Andy frequently provided illustrations to accompany articles for The San Antonio Light. These illustrations were done with a variety of media including watercolor, colored pencil, pen and ink and markers.

Andy became interested in another medium to express his visions: computers. Self taught on the computer he has been able to completely transform his method of creating design and art from that of pencil and marker drawing and rendering to that of presentations and ideation through the computer thereby making corrections, color changes, etc. a more efficient way of getting to good design and art.

It was during the phase of getting familiar with how the computer works and what it could do that Andy saw its potential in the fine arts. The computer was another tool in his artists box, a very fancy pencil. “The artist generates the art, not the computer” is his reply to those who wonder if ‘computer generated art’ is in fact ‘generated’ by the computer.

Using traditional artists materials alongside his constantly evolving digital tools research, Andy continues to explore imagery that best expresses his thoughts and ideas.

Today Andy lives in Helotes, Texas with his wife, Jo Ann along with many animal friends. Andy has three daughters, Jennifer, Ashley and Lauren.
