Description Drawing of an aerial battle between fighter aircraft using Prismacolor pencils on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol paper. The drawing depicts a scene of my grandfather, Alexander Gordon Tyrrell, engaged in a dogfight in the First World War. He outlined the scenario in a letter to my great grandmother which was later published in Charlotte Grays Canada: A Portrait in Letters, 1800-2000.My grandfather, a World War 1 Flying Ace, joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 when he was 20 years old. He was a Canadian fighter pilot who saw service in France in a Sopwith Camel. He described I had my first real fight with a Fokker. At about 2000 feet I had just turned west when I noticed three of the enemy suddenly emerge from a cloud about a thousand feet above and in front of me. I side-slipped steeply to the right and just as I heard a pop, pop, pop pulled the old bus (plane) up and around to the left as I have never done before.'Lest we never forget.'Gray, Charlotte.
