Description 15x11 Watercolor;Greeks founded the city of Paestum. Originally called Poseidonia by the Greeks, the city was later renamed Paestum by the Romans. Located in southern Italy on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Paestum is best known for the remains of three ancient Greek temples. The temples, built in the Doric order, are dedicated to the Greek gods, two to the goddess Hera and one to the goddess Athena. After occupation by Greece and Rome, the city was abandoned somewhere between 400 CE and 900 CE and forgotten until the 1700s, when archaeologists and historians rediscovered it.The most impressive part of Paestum is two well-preserved temples dedicated to the goddess, Hera. The first temple was built around 550 BCE. The second temple was built around 450 BCE. They are considered to be some of the best surviving examples of Greek architecture.The First Temple of Hera is also known as the basilica, as early archaeologists believed the structure to be a meeting place, rather than a temple. As excavation continued, small figures of Hera, the wife of Zeus, were found, indicating that this was a temple dedicated to her. The temple has a single row of Doric-order limestone columns surrounding the entire temple, but has lost the frieze, cornice, and roof.
