A jockey gets a leg up from the trainer. This is usually achieved in one smooth, sweeping motion as graceful as a ballet move. The dance begins with the jockey lifting his left leg to the back, offering his calf to the trainer. The trainer stoops and grabs the leg, lifting up, and at the same time, the jockey gives a little jump. Somehow they manage to coordinate their motions without the rider flying over the other side of the horse. Oh, and did I mention, the horse is usually being led forward at the same time, and is sometimes a little fractious due to all the excitement?
