In the words of Victorian author Amelia Murray MacGregor:
Angus MacDonell: Wearing a MacDonell of Keppoch kilt. In the background a view of the corrie of Unach Mor, Inverness-shire. This portrait, painted by MacLeay before the sitter emigrated to Australia in 1855 is the prototype for the whole series. MacDonell shared a mutual great-grandfather with MacLeay. Stocky and informally dressed, and painted on a different, creamier paper, with more use of gum arabic in the painting of the eyes, this portrait clearly demonstrates how, with his later sitters, MacLeay improved on their appearance, giving them, poise, elegance and immaculate costumes, but perhaps thereby losing the immediacy of MacDonell's portrait.
