Description Original Watercolor Painting approximately 30' X 42'- Prior to tourism, coffee and ranching were two primary sources of income in Costa Rica. This future cowboy (vaquero) was one of a family of children that would come open the gate on a private ranch for surfers to pass through to the Esterillos surf break south of Jaco Beach. The family lived in a small shack with a zinc roof, and no electricity. Often children enjoyed the novelty of a sticker or a balloon as a tiny thank you for their help of opening the gate. This grinning Tico boy was delighted with a red balloon. The Ticos of Costa Rica are known for being a welcoming and friendly people, this child's smile is the quintessence of Tico warmth. The quality of life for many rural Ticos has improved in recent years; more is shared in my gallery description.
