Lord Rayleigh's Light
Some nights, as the sun slowly settles out of sight, science paints the sky with particles and mist in a particularly spectacular palette .I remember talk of angels, the haloes of saints, the blue of Mary's robe. When stars play hide and seek in clouds of feathered wings it's tempting to think they're lighting the way home to heaven, so glorious is their diffusion and their glow. Who wouldn't want the tender arms of Jesus to receive one, rather than the hungry mouths of worms and the unknowable? But it's only molecules of air mixed with pollutants that make a sky like this, selectively scattering sunlight's spectrum of varied wavelengths into a beauty so miraculous it's hard not to believe there's a better home awaiting in the sky. ~ copyright 2017 RC deWinter
