Description 11'x15' Watercolor; The Church of St. Louis of the French is a Roman Catholic church in Rome. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, to St. Denis the Areopagite, and St. Louis IX, king of France. The church was being constructed during 15181589 by French architect Domenico Fontana using Giacomo Della Portas design by order of Cardinal Giulio de Medici. The place was supposed to belong to its Cardinal and French community that resided in Rome. Catherine de' Medici, queen of France, her husband Henry II provided funding for the construction. Previously owned by Medici family Santa Maria Church occupied this spot. The churchs nave is a riot of Baroque decorations, featuring marble sculptures and gilded stucco in almost every inch. Coupled with the highly ornate ceilings and elaborate carvings. The churchs most famous pieces of art are housed in the Contarelli Chapel. Within it can be found a set of three large paintings by the famous Italian artist Caravaggio which depict major events in the life of Saint Matthew the Evangelist. These paintings are The Calling of St. Matthew, The Inspiration of St. Matthew, and The Martyrdom of St. Matthew. The church also has several famous tombs. The church combines its exterior simplicity and interior fanciness surprisingly well. The marble front side is embellished with statues of saints. Many French and Italian painters took part in enriching the interior of the sanctuary. This church has one of the most ornate and richest coffered ceilings in any structure in Rome. These coffered ceilings are also adorned with a beautiful fresco painted by the French artist Charles Joseph Natoire.
