Description Colorized photo from 1943Original title: Lifting an engine for wheelingPhotographer: Jack DelanoLocation: 777 1st St SW, Albuquerque, NMThis is the Locomotive repair shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico. They did a bit of everything in this shop. Make new parts, fix or replace the wheels, rebuild the engine. To accomplish this, they would have to remove the engine from the wheel mounts by lifting it off with a giant gantry crane. With nothing more than a few cables holding it, they would remove this 350,000 pound chunk of metal over your head. It's a job where you always had a crick in your neck because there might be a train flying over your head. They said working here, you came back covered in dirt. Working in the pits was very hard, cramped and filthy. There were loud sounds in the background when they popped wheels off axle's using a press. It was a sound that could be heard across the shop. While lifting locomotives like this looks really dangerous, it is, but I'd still like to see what it looked like in person.
