Description Many ancient structures stand at the top of Acropolis and one of them is the Erechtheion (built around 421407 BC). On the porch of this structure are six caryatids. Carving columns into maidens (caryatids) was common in Greek and Italian architecture and eventually spread to Germany, England and Scotland. The Erectheion caryatids, in a shrine dedicated to an archaic king of Athens, may represent priestesses of Artemis in Kary, a place named for the 'nut-tree sisterhood' in Mycenaean times, like other plural feminine toponyms, such as Hyrai or Athens itself.
