Artist Statement I majored in art at Garden Grove High School. I fell in love with woodcuts and print making. I developed my first roll of black and white film using trays, in my wardrobe closet, then my dad built a darkroom for me in the back yard. I eventually became a public school teacher and included serigraphy, styro block printing, pinhole photography, pressed ceramic tiles (as in Avalon, Catalina), quilting, and watercolor in my elementary school classroom. My children sometimes illustrated their spelling tests.
At California Polytechnic University I earned my Masters in Education in the unusual field of Visual Literacy, a masters in looking. The most memorable topics were watercolor classes, video, photography in the classroom (pinhole), and history & use of the computer in education. At that time email was just starting.
But when I discovered I could push my photos into images, I had found a brush I could wrap my head around — PhotoShop. It is a deep box of tools, actually. I shoot photos with the end product in mind. My 10 meg Lumix DMZ75 shoots RAW. It is not an SLR, but I like the versatility of a 35-420mm zoom even though it is electronic.
I build and maintain boats for a hobby. We love to sail. I quilt, snorkel with my son, write childrens' stories, ski and read a lot. I volunteer, helping people in Whittier, working with men from my church.
My wife is retired from third grade teaching. Our daughter works for NBC-Universal. Our son is a high school counselor in Palos Verdes.
