Artist Statement My name is Mary Grew, and art makes me happy. I currently live in Minnetonka, Minnesota with my boyfriend, Ryan, and our cat, Friday.
I took my first oil painting class when I was fifteen, and from the moment that I picked up the brush I was in love. Since then I have branched out and taken courses in watercolor painting, photography, jewelry making, and drawing. I have also spent a significant amount of time on my own using acrylic paints. My favorite medium will always be oil, though.
During the beginning of my artistic career, I focused on painting specific subjects. Throughout the years, however, my love for abstract art began to develop more and more. During my first year of college I began experimenting with mixed media and collage style paintings. It was during this time that I first started using acrylic paints, as well.
For the moment, my main focus is on abstract paintings. I have begun using oils more than I have in years, and the rest of the world disappears while I lose myself in my art. I am still using acrylics, and I have begun experimenting with watercolors again for the first time since high school.
Other artistic hobbies of mine that I still practice are photography and crocheting. While I am not using my free time to create my own art, I enjoy losing myself in the artistic creations of others. You can usually find me covered in paint, snuggling with my cat, buried in a book, wrapped up in yarn, or mixed up in a pleasant combination of any of these.
