Description Colorized photo from 1938, OctOriginal title: Icing soft drink refrigerator in general store.Photographer: Russell LeeLocation: South of Altheimer, ARThis is a small general store that was located northeast of Pine Bluff and South of Altheimer, Arksansas. It was a small town by a large lake, that was established as a part of a new deal program that supported farming projects. They established a community there in 1936 and it was fairly complete town. They had this general store, a cotton gin, repair shop, feed and grist mill, sweet potato curing house, syrup mill and meat processing plant, as well as marketing facilities. I'm not totally familiar with refrigeration practices, but it seems like they are breaking up ice around the soda, which looks like a lot of work. It makes me wonder how many were stabbed in the leg when it deflected. But I bet they were coldAn interesting bit of trivia, that during the depression years, candy bar makers would add on to their labels that some how it was healthy. A chocolate bar might show that its a good source of nutritious, or another one on the left here shows it has Dextrose, a good source of quick energy (its sugar). You can see other fun snacks in the trays, if your wondering what those puffy things are on the left, I have no idea either. They may be some kind of free range candy bar.
