Description From our land land on Tar Barrel Hill, Aquinnah, Martha's Vineyard the view on a clear day. Looking South West you see glimpses of South Beach and North East Vineyard Sound. With some clearing the original stone walls ring the property. Many years ago when Tar Barrel Hill was open as cattle grazed the land which kept the vegetation sparce. We have been told that on nice summer days members of the Wampanoag tribe came up here to picnic and enjoy the views.
Michael Karasik, Baltimore Member Since January 2008 Artist StatementMy paintings are usually painted with modeling clay, occasionally I use water colors, pastels and crayons on heavy paper. The modeling clay technique was developed 1999. It immediately resonated with me. I became captivated by the immediacy of using my fingers as a brush, the unlimited range of color and the complexity resulting from layering clay, pulling the clay across the board to create veils of color and utilizing the three dimensional property inherent in clay.
Most of my photographs are of our home's gardens, trees and swimming pool. I hope that you will enjoy the art from our environment.
I have been commissioned to photograph art works for fellow artist and chosen as a 'Featured Artist' on the Imagekind website.
I have lived in Baltimore for about 24 years. My wife, Ellen Callegary, is a lawyer who represents individuals with disabilities.
My brother Paul Karasik is a ‘New Yorker’ cartoonist and graphic novelist. Most recently Paul was awarded an Eisner award for his graphic novel Fletcher Hanks: I Shall Destroy All the Civilized Planets. My sister Judy Karasik and Paul co-authored The Ride Together a story which is both graphic and narrative about my brother David who has autism.
