Description Even 'ordinary' scenes at beautiful Sugar Mill Gardens are extraordinary! Set on 12 acres of land, the gardens boast a truly historic past as the former Dunlawton Plantation, site of a Seminole Indian uprising which stopped the production of sugar in this area. Many years later, itmorphed into one of the first tourist parks in the late 1940's, and early 1950's. It was called Bongoland, after a baboon named Bongo that became its mascot. visitors could ride through the grounds on a tram, and view the many concrete dinosaurs which were built by an artist. At that time, there were over 20 of them, but now, only about 6 remain. I actually can vaguely remember going there as a little girl with my mother, but by then the park didn't have Bongo, and to be honest, I remember a tram, and dinosaurs, but no baboon! It was the late 50's by the time I visited. Places like Cypress Gardens and Marineland were captivating tourists by that time, and a bunch of concrete critters hardly seemed exciting to most people! Still, even to this day, little children's eyes light up when they see the statues, which are lifesize. There's still a little magic left in Sugar Mill Gardens.
Chris Crowley, South Daytona Member Since July 2008 Artist Statement I have been doing pen and ink work since the 1970's, and eventually developed a style where I used watercolor washes with it. While I liked the results, I wanted more.
In 2006 I got my first digital camera. Once I realized what you could do with post processing on a photograph, I began altering them to become artwork. Now, I alter my artwork to become photos! The resulting mixed media final products are fun for me to do, and have opened a whole new world of creativity and possibility! While I still like both pure art and photography, I love pushing the boundaries of each.
Living in the Central Florida area for most of my life has provided me with beautiful scenery to capture. Whether it be a macro of a flower that is altered into a surreal state, or amping up the colors of a scenic, photography has become a way of life, and so has post processing, which brings out the artistic heart in me. It was just natural to progress from that to digitally altering my hand done art, as well. My style is my own, and I hope you enjoy my work as much as I enjoy presenting it to you!
