Mitchell A. McClenney - Artist Statement My artwork takes a different view of objects, and places, we see in everyday life via current events, life experiences, and my own meandering thoughts. In my work, I represent the American landscape, ideals, familiar places, and people that are part of our culture over the last century. Having engaged themed subjects as diverse as the urban New York City, seaside Southern California, rural America, wine country, and most recently Little Rock landscapes. My work produces familiar visual signs, arranging them into new conceptually layered pieces. My arrangements are curious, inviting the viewer to move into the space and look around. I rely on our desires for beauty, meaning, and understanding. I'm intrigued by the repetition of buildings and windows in his City Series, while gentle and expansive skies take over for the California paintings. I use a variety of colorful media, and materials, for each painting, or project, and the same methodology is consistent. The same artistic process and use of material produces recoginable stylized work that I have been practicing for about 25 years. The subject matter of each body of work determines the scope, size, media, and materials to be used in the formation of the work. I use the photo to finished painting method which uses reference photos but does render the final painting exactly from the picture. My photos are admittedly blurry, torn or digital images that I glance at while painting. People are always surprised to see the original photo when compaired to the final painting which is vastly different from the source photo. I interpret each photograph liberally, changing perspective or color or both. Working light to dark with plenty of water. My art often consists of multiple works, often in a range of different subject matter, grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and production new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work. Materials I use are acrylic paints in a watercolor fashion which allows transparent and opaque values to play together. Generally starting with a simple sketch on canvas using graphite. Liner brushes make all the difference. I'm currently experimenting in scupture using plaster, wax, modeling clay, resins, wood, wire and glue. I have found the histories of surrealism, minimalism, moderism, and impressionism to be useful in the rearrangment of ideas. My work swings between abstract realism and impressionism. The objects I make are placed in the canon of modernist art. My influences are first and foremost everything I see, feel and experience, but I've always loved the modern masters. The artists I most admire are Edward Hopper, Andy Warhol, Picasso, and Van Gogh.
