Description Battle of Antietam. On September 17, 1862 over 22,000 troops were killed at Antietam during a 12-hour period. In view is Antietam Creek and Burnside bridge. The creek is often called Blood Creek due to the blood of thousands of troops mixing with the creek's water. The photo was taken from the Confederates' vantage point as they shot at Union soldiers attempting to cross the bridge.
