Artist Statement It began with light, and after all these years, it is still about light. As a kid at five, and as a professional photographer today, the intrigue remains. “Photo” is light.

It keeps me in its spell as it interacts with objects, creates texture, defines lines, produces contrast, reveals depth and sparks illusion. All this is light. It is the medium that defines my work.

I seek simplicity and proportion when I photograph as well. I study the work of the great painters and photographers who are compelled by light and its many facets. Every movement and relationship is influenced by light.

The constructions that now occupy me also define me as a “photo-archaeologist.” They begin with the germ of an idea, and become reality through objects found which capture my imagination. An environmental element, my mother-in-law’s propensity for saving items, pieces of collections left at my father’s farm since he died – all are candidates for constructions that reveal histories and impact feelings. All are resources awaiting recognition, and photo-construction. So, my work is to use their antique patina, and chisel their emotional meaning into a cohesive design.

I find myself profoundly affected by the beauty of things around me. I hope to
communicate this feeling to others through my work.
