Description Colorized photo from the 1860'sOriginal Title: View looking east of the Naval Academy and Fort Severn in the backgroundPhotographer: Brady-HandyLocation: Naval Academy, Annapolis, MDThis is the Naval Academy in Annapolis Maryland, as it was seen in the late 1860s. As you can see it looks nothing like it does now. The current building was constructed around 1909.The location we are standing in is I think roughly where the courtyard is now, in line with the chapel. Based on old maps, the Santee Basin should be where those boats are moored. As for the boats, one of them should be the Santee and the other is the USS Constitution. The building on the right is the Seamanship Dept, and also the rear view of the cadet quarters (also known as the Junior buildings), those are located in the back row.For Severn (that small round building in the distance), was built in 1808 and demolished in 1909, the location of that spot is marked with a small sign attached to one of the buildings that are standing there now. That spot is at the end of Cooper Rd. During the Civil war students didn't attend here and any expanding of the school stopped. But afterward they had a large building boom. Building up almost everything we see today. While some of the current buildings look really old, they are only a hundred twenty or so years old.
