Description Colorized photo from 1893Original Title: South Water Street, East from MarketPhotographer: S.L. Stein Pub. Co. Location: 235 south water street, Chicago, ILThis was the original location of the South Water Street market. Started at least in the 1890's, this spot was the place to get all your produce. There were always a lot of people and horses crowding the streets. They sold mostly wholesale goods, vegetables, fruits, and on this street, cheese and dairy. But almost everything could be found here. It was basically a grocery distribution hub. As the loop began to grow and modernize, they wanted to move this market some place else. There was always a lot of noise, it was very busy, and the smell of horses and rotting fruit was a bit over whelming. The retail and business district was very close to here. So the city devised a plan, in 1925, they relocated this area into a building on 1099 W 15th St. A complex made up to hold 166 units. It was enclosed, and it was used for a number of years. They stopped selling produce and the buildings were made into an historic landmark. This area was cleared to make way for something new and progressive. Inspired by Paris, they designed a new road way. Something that had a upper and lower level. The lower level was designed for commercial vehicles, and the upper, for passenger. The road was named Wacker Dr, after the person who thought of the idea. This spots were are standing is about 301 W Wacker Dr. Market street was also used for this road. This all took place in 1925.
