Description Colorized photo from 1940 AprilOriginal Title: Des Moines, IowaPhotographer: John VachonLocation: Walnut & Fourth, Des Moines, IowaIt's interesting to look back in time and see how your city used to look like. What buildings survived over the years, and just how different it all looked. If you were to visit this spot today, you would see the entire center section of buildings were removed, along with the road. The building on the right center was the Valley National Bank Building, built 1916 and imploded in 1981, to make room for the Capital Square. The Kirkwood hotel is still there and is still a hotel. It was built in 1930, it has 12 stories, and became the third 'skyscraper hotel' in the Des Moines area. Down the block is the Savery Hotel, which was converted to apartments. I believe the name lived on as a hotel chain. The gas station is gone, as well as the street car. Even here you can see them limiting where it can go by cutting out the turn lanes.
