Description The Red Tailed Falcon photograph was taken on Sunday 11-29-2009, at 1018 hours, about one mile North of Bush Highway on Highway 87, in Arizona. (Nikon D-700, D-SLR, 12MP, 1/2000 sec, F 3.5, with both Spot Metering and Focusing, ISO 320, with a 70-200mm 2.8 G VR ED Zoom, 14 Bit RAW) The Falcon was sitting on a cactus on the west side of the road while I was traveling north. I drive about three miles before the first turn around. I didnt think he would still be on the cactus upon my return. To my amazement, he was. I took a couple of landscape shots with him sitting on a cactus. He flew off to my right rear area. I noticed he didnt go high in the sky. I thought he might have landed somewhere on the lower landscape area, so I put my car in reverse and drove backwards on the shoulder about three hundred feet. There he was, sitting on a bush. I stopped my car and rolled down my rear window. I took a few shots while sitting in my front seat, leaning backward, pointing my lens through the rear passenger side window to obtain the shot. My lens read the distance from my location which estimated him thirty feet away. He looked at me for about five seconds and flew off. The soft light from the sun coming through the clouds above me, gave the Falcon the perfect light. To the north, the backdrop behind the Falcon, was darkened from the rain clouds. This was the closest I have gotten to this animal to date.
