Artist Statement American author Ted Lerner's timeless classic, "Hey, Joe" has sold over 10,000 copies and is a mainstay for residents and travelers in the Philippines. The book, which contains 33 offbeat, often eye popping, but true stories, depicts life in the 3rd world mega metropolis of Manila through the eyes of a resident foreigner(Ted.)

Accompanying the outrageous and lively text is 14 brilliant sketches by Filipino artist Vicky Villanueva Firestone. Vicky is a 1984 graduate of the Universtiy of Sto. Tomas in Manila, Philippines with a degree in Fine Arts. She is also the sister-in-law of the author.

Vicky drew the sketches in pencil and did the cover of "Hey,Joe" in pastels. Her simple, yet highly detailed imagery, provides the perfect compliment to Ted's man-on-the-street stories. By themselves, the sketches offer a fanciful and intimate portrait of ordinary people and everyday life in Manila, one of the world's most crowded cities.

Vicky also painted the cover of Ted Lerner's new book, "The Traveler and the Gate Checkers"
