Artist Statement I have lived in Illinois all my life but I have always felt connected to Maine and the Maritimes. I started my love for the Maine Coast and Atlantic Maritimes when I attended a workshop early the 1970’s. I really enjoy painting these areas because I find that “they offer so many different types of environment, weather and light that the visual possibilities feel endless.”

Maine in particular has harbored a great tradition of painters including Cole, Church, Lane, Marin, Hartley and Welliver and others. For many years I rented houses in Maine and the Maritimes, and spent many weeks during the spring and fall seasons painting its varied landscape. My preferred medium is watercolor, but I also use Chinese Ink preferring to grind my own ink, having learned to do this while on an art study trip to China.

Every stroke and detail that I paint come together to create my love for the coast as only someone who has spent a lot of time there. I want to show the viewer the quiet beauty of these areas. These scenes often show you just a glimpse of the shoreline’s delicate life, or of a coastal community. I am creating works of art that depict my love for the Maritimes in such a way that I hope the viewer feels a sense of longing for it, too.
