Description The Man with the Golden Arm is a 1955 drama film, based on the novel of the same name by Nelson Algren, which tells the story of a heroin addict who gets clean while in prison, but struggles to stay that way in the outside world. It stars Frank Sinatra, Eleanor Parker, Kim Novak, Arnold Stang and Darren McGavin. It was adapted for the screen by Walter Newman, Lewis Meltzer and Ben Hecht (uncredited), and directed by Otto Preminger.[1]It was nominated for three Academy Awards: Sinatra for Best Actor in a Leading Role, Joseph C. Wright and Darrell Silvera for Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White and Elmer Bernstein for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture. Sinatra was also nominated for best actor awards by the BAFTAs and The New York Film Critics.[2]The film was controversial for its time; the Motion Picture Association of America refused to certify the film[3] because it showed drug addiction. The Man With The Golden Arm, a gritty 1955 black and white film adaptation, uniquely portrayed heroin as a serious literary topic as it rejected the standard 'dope fiend' approach of the time. It was the first of its kind to tackle the marginalized issue of illicit drug use.[4] Because it dealt with the taboo subject of 'narcotics,' Hollywood's Production Code refused to grant a seal of approval for the film. The film was released without the MPAA's seal of approval. This sparked a change in production codes, allowing movies more freedom to more deeply explore hitherto taboo subjects such drug abuse, kidnapping, abortion and prostitution.Frank Sinatra - who jumped at a chance to star in the film before reading the entire script - spent time at drug rehabilitation clinics observing addicts going cold turkey[5]. The script was given to Marlon Brando around the same time as Sinatra, who still harboured some anger at Brando since he had beaten out Sinatra for the lead role in On the Waterfront.
Eric Dee, Boulder Colorado Member Since June 2008 Artist Statement I started painting in the late 70's but would paint typically 2 or so paintings a year. I experimented with everything from portraits and nudes to landscapes. But I was a Rambler, and a bit of an adventurer who suddenly found himself far from his Canadian home and Married with Children and living and starting a career in the corp. world in the mid 80's.
My oil paints and brushes and tools went into a box and wasn't opened again for almost 20 years in late 2007. They had all melted together from years in 100+ degree garage heat and rendered useless other than to stir up old emotions
So I restocked. I had a vision to attack the subject of celebrity portraits in basic monochrome and focus on trying to capture the essence of the character. And so I start with a blank canvas and I paint until all I can hear is the artist perform ( in the case of the musicians at least ) in my head. Then it's time for another. I can't stop this time. I feel like I need to make up for 20 years.
The kids have grown, the Wife is gone and I intend to take this art thing as far as it will go. Welcome to my new adventure. Please feel free to ride along with me. I will do my best to update often. There will be some pieces off on temporary tangents but I have so many artists and talent to pay tribute to and I hope to stay focused on the intended format for the most part.
