Description Colorized photo from 1939Original Title: Negro grocery storePhotographer: Wolcott Marion PostLocation: 802 West Gwinnett Street, Savannah, GAIt's nice to be in walking distance of a grocery, and it doesn't have to be one of those super stores, where you need a golf cart just to get milk. Its actually nicer to just have one choice of things, where your in and out in just a few minutes. You get to learn your neighbors names, or at least their eating habits, see that they took advantage of the sale for lard and kerosene, and wonder what they will be doing with all of it. What's even more convenient, you can even get gas there. That's right, you thought it was a new thing to have a grocery store at a gas station. They were doing that long ago, only it was in reverse, they would have gas at the grocery store, you could also get it at the post office and really almost everywhere. Standards in safety were lower back then.
