Description On February 4, 2007, I shot this image of Holly O'Reilly that became the cover of her fifth album, Gifts & Burdens. When I moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2006, I was excited by the checkered kitchen floor of friend Star, and knew I had to use it in photographs some day. That day came sooner than I expected, with results better than I could have dreamed. We did a series of Holly in a black shirt, and, for a lark, she suggested more with a striped sweater she'd brought to the session. I thought it would be too much, but it worked like a charm. We agreed it reminded us of Tom Petty's Alice in Wonderland-inspired video for 'Don't Come Around Here No More', and we joked that we intended this effect fully, in advance. Sometimes the best shots are spontaneous. I would be remiss if I didn't add that Holly's album is wonderful, and it is an honor to be a part of it.
Robert Peate, Oregon City Member Since August 2007 Artist Statement
My name is Robert Peate, and I have been taking photographs for business and pleasure since 1987. I specialize in capturing the characters of human beings, going deeper, creating a connection between viewer and subject, but I also enjoy trying to find the character hidden in inanimate objects.
In 2006 I was fortunate enough to have a photograph used on an episode of the Oprah Winfrey Show ("Dreams Come True, with Emilio Estevez"), of which I am proud.
In 2011 acclaimed editorial illustrator Zina Saunders said, "I am a fan . . . your work is terrific!" I was pleasantly surprised and humbled.
The pictures here represent many different sides of my experience. I hope you enjoy them.
