Artist Statement Julie Brown Maiolo (1942-2010) received her B.A. in Art from Concordia College, Moorhead, Minnesota, and attended graduate school in visual arts at University of Virginia, American University, University of Minnesota Duluth, and University of Wisconsin Superior. She began her teaching career in the South, where she was active in school integration and civil rights. She also created an art department with innovative programs for a new high school outside Washington, D.C., and was a consulting editor for an art book published by Prentice-Hall. For 33 years, in five states, Maiolo taught children and young adults; and in 2002, she received a state Art Educators of Minnesota Award. Julie Maiolo was a fellow at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Sweetbriar, Virginia.

Her art work has been exhibited in various places in the Duluth-Superior region, including the Duluth Art Institute and Tweed Museum, and in Norway, Northern Virginia, Charlottesville, Moorhead, and the Minneapolis College of Art & Design.

Artist's Statement:

A painting can emerge with its own form and presence when it has shed the obvious, or the distracting details of the objective world that inspired it, and, instead, it only alludes to them and builds from the form found hidden or imagined. When the abstracted images emerge directly from the conceptual womb, care must be taken to strengthen them with the scaffolding of the natural or objective world.

I usually like to work the canvas with vibrant color, passionately, moving in and out of the identifiable, giving thought to strength of form, value distribution, and rhythm. Spontaneity and poignancy are welcome companions.
