Michael Facey, New York City
Member Since November 2008
Artist Statement Michael Facey was born with pencil in hand in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, New York. His passion for drawing came at a very early age, being influenced by the late, great Alex Toth through his imaginative characters in Hanna Barbera cartoons as well as the Superfriends. Facey was also influenced by Jack Kirby, Dean Cornwell. J.C Leyendecker, and Sergio Toppi. He developed countless characters and storylines of his own, compiling them on staple-bound loose leaf comic books of his own make-shift variety.

Facey was accepted into the High School of Art and Design where he honed his craft as a cartoonist and gained a greater appreciation for the arts. During this time he provided editorial illustrations for the student driven newspaper New Youth Connections. His high contrast black and white illustrations were a standout for their realism and style. The artist also applied this black and white brush style to advertising work for the Off Broadway production house Medicine Show Theatre Company.

Facey made the transition from black and white to full color in High School and in college at the prestigious Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. His entire artistic approach was broadened by the training he received from artists such as John Van Fleet, Kent Williams, and the widely influential David Passalaqua. He experienced success as an artist, holding small group shows in Park Slope and Clinton Hill in Brooklyn. His freelance work provided him a much larger audience through portrait work and corporate logo design. The birth of his two children inspired Michael to transition from paint to digital art in order to keep his family safe from the toxic elements in his traditional mediums.

The ability to work in many mediums including digital is a strength that the artist is now using to reach an even larger audience. Now with a presence on the internet, Facey’s traditional and computer illustrated work is gaining popularity all over the world.
