Description L'Isle-sur-la-Sorge In the region of Provence-Alpes-Cte d'AzurAugust 2016We found this magical village, the antique capital of France, when we stayed in the south of France for three weeks in 2016, and wow! What a find! As early as the 12th century, the River Sorgue served defensively as a moat around ramparts which surrounded the town until 1795. The river also served as a source of food and industry: fishing and artisan mills for oil, wheat, silk, paper, rugs, and dyeing. The current Sunday open-air market originated on 9 November 1596, and the entire village participates in the market! The landmark in this image is now a bank.
