These Pages
Scribbles of a life well-lived are all this journal holds. These pages, torn and tattered, sport coffee stains and careless drips from a cherrydip ice cream cone.
Here, a puckered black balloon (souvenir of a cigarette held too closely to the bone) obscures a quarto leaf of living, lost forever to the future, blighted beyond reclamation, but, there on the page, bytes of memory, silent witness to events burnt way past telling.
In the middle see? it's been reglued, leaves replaced, though not in order, the chronology of life haphazard reading.
No matter, really it's the feel of the thing, not merely timing, that's important. Is there a specific point that can alter the entire volume? All events elide and twine, become threads of interwoven fabric, spun here willy-nilly, loomed catch-as-catch-can, bits and pieces of a greater story.
Step away from close inspection and the colors intermingle. Some flow softly into patterns. Others rudely shoulder others, shocking in their dissonance. Blink fast and once again it changes, what was cloth is now the paper of the journal that you opened and began inscribing all these years ago.
No doubt there will be more spills staining antique vellum as the quill scratches incessantly 'til all your ink is gone. 2011 RC deWinter
