Last Sunset
A hot latesummer day, we'd made that long car ride to Maine, a flying trip to see a school you ended up not liking; an irritable sort of day, complete with getting lost and being late for the grand tour neither one of us enjoyed.
After an unimpressive meal in the caf - pretty odd, now that I think on it, for a school of the culinary arts - we headed back across green lawns to where we'd left the car, again getting lost, a few wrong walking turns around some buildings, endless faceless clones of muddy block.
Tempers short, we headed south, dispirited at crossing yet another off the list. You told me not to fuss; you weren't even sure that cooking was for you. I knew your confusion, the blessing and the curse of many talents and the pressure to choose one while starving out the others.
And suddenly the sunset to our right - a gaudy bright palette of vivid color - caught your attention. You fumbled in your backpack for the camera and whizzing by at seventy shot two dozen pictures without stopping.
I should've stopped. I should've stopped the car. I should've pulled off the damn highway, found a place where we could sit and watch the sun bid fond farewell to that long day. But tired, in a hurry, I kept driving. There's always another sunset to admire.
But what I couldn't know was that's a lie. There was no other sunset left for us. We never got to sit awash in twilight; instead I have your photos in a box. ~ copyright 2014 RC deWinter
