Description Medusa was always a childhood heroine of mine. I remember watching 'Clash of the Titans' about 1,000 times, and I always had the useless hope that somehow, Ray Harryhausen's stop-motion demoness would survive the siege of Perseus and his invading army.In ancient times, Medusa was worshipped as a Goddess in Libya. It wasn't until the influence of the patriarchal Greeks that she became a monster or 'Gorgon'.There are several inconsistant Greeks legends about Medusa, the most widely known is that she was transformed into a Gorgon by Athena, after Medusa had offended the Goddess. Medusa was either 'seduced' or raped by Poseidon in Athena's temple, and since it was SO much easier to punish the mortal...Medusa was said to have two immortal Gorgon sisters as well, Stheno (Strength) and Euryale (Wide Traveler). Medusa means 'Queen'.The original painting is gouache, 2006.
