Artist Statement I discovered Astrophotography purely by accident.
Two Years ago my wife gave me a beginners telescope as a Christmas gift just for fun. With the typical Rochester winter weather, I didn’t even get a chance to try it out until about two months later. Once I got the scope outside and aimed it at the full moon for my first view of the night sky with something other than my eyes I was simply blown away ! I had no idea that the simple white disc of the moon could hold so many fascinating views ! I saw craters, mountains, and flat grey expanses that looked like seas of grey dust. After that first night I visited a few websites to learn more about the moon and stumbled across an amateur photo site were people had taken a simple point and shoot digital camera and held it up to the telescope eyepiece. I was so amazed at the results these people were getting I had to try it for myself ! I went out and bought a Canon point and shoot camera and a special mounting bracket that would allow me to point the camera lens down into the telescope eyepiece. I shot some nice images of the moon and after that there was no turning back. I soon upgraded to a better telescope that would automatically compensate for the rotation of the earth and began taking some really beautiful and interesting shots of the night sky. It never ceases to amaze me what is out there in the vast universe that I cant see with my limited eyesight, but the camera can capture with long exposures. For me nothing is more peaceful or awe inspiring than sitting outside on a warm summers night gazing at the majestic beauty of the universe and capturing all that wonderful light to bring indoors for everyone’s enjoyment !
