Artist Statement I first started painting in my preteen years. My mother, Carmen Casanova, was a big influence on me. She always made sure we learned about art, bought inexpensive prints of masterpieces and decorated our little condo in Venezuela (where I was born and raised) with them. She bought art encyclopedias and took us to art museums. My parents got divorced when we were little and my mother taught us what she thought was one of the most important things in life.... Art. I don't have any formal training except for a few classes PNCA w/prof. Steven Mauldin and also with Michael Orwick in Hillsboro, OR. and another one or two courses in Venezuela. I didn't take art seriously when I was so young and started painting, and therefore got distracted and didn't follow my heart, but people (neighbors and friends) liked what I did and bought some of my paintings and commissioned some paintings too . I stopped painting for a few years because I didn't think this would become a career for me, but when I picked up a brush again, I felt "alive" and happy once again! And it all came back, the feeling the joy of painting, back to what I am passionate about, oil painting. Thanks mainly to a dream I had and also an epifany.



My love and passion for painting shows in my pieces. I put on canvas all I'm feeling at the moment, and because I am so in tune with my works and my soul, I believe it shows. I literally fall in love with my paintings, and it may sound a bit arrogant of me, but I put my all on what you see. My art has a part of me, and my passionate self shows through my paintings.



Lately I decided to make a tribute to my multiracial heritage by creating a series of paintings . "Interracial Lovers", which represents the love between white men and black women. It is a tribute to my heritage, family and my own romantic relationships. When I first got interested in this subject, I researched the internet and found but only one piece of interracial art of black woman/white man. I then decided that the world really needed more of it!. The need was created; that basic drive to create something. For me it is that I am not satisfied with the way I see things or the way they are represented, so I have that deep desire to create a version of those things. I started the collection in 2010 and I plan to continue painting this theme until there are so many that people will start to recognize my pieces and hopefully remember me as one of the very first artists to paint about this particular subject that has been avoided or ignored for so long!
