Artist Statement Karen D. Terry grew up in Queens, New York.
While living in New York Karen enjoyed the frequent trips her family made down south. Karen envied the freedom that her cousins had to run the green fields, climb trees and throw rocks. To her there was no better feeling than to sit on a front porch during the rain or to watch the day become the night.
Karen brings historical figures to life with her one woman historical re-enactment productions as she portrays Miss Jane Pittman, Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman.
In Community Theater she has been involved in 6 productions backstage as well as a lead cast member with the Children’s Theater of South Hill, Virginia. She gained experience in directing, costume design and set design under the leadership of the late Mrs. Margaret Walker former director of the drama and speech department at Virginia State University.
Karen worked in 3 productions with the Chase City Community Players as choreographer for their productions of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, Little Shop of Horrors, and Grease.”
Karen created a series of black and white prints called 'Woman' and a series she calls 'The Queens Village Kids' .
Karen has overcome domestic violence which lead her to live many years with low self esteem and self worth. Art and writing have been healing tools for her.
'I have just come into the woman that I wanted to be all my life but did not think that I could. I have stepped out of the box. It brings me great joy to share and to know that someone enjoys what I have created whether in writing or on canvas. Life can be good.'
