Artist Statement I have always been fascinated by photography, or for that matter, any form of sensory recording. For me, the process of picture taking, subject choice and analysis, is one which provides a huge amount of spiritual fulfilment. As a young man I was afflicted with a very dark sense of existential angst (I think many young people are) but with me it was particularly intense. I felt alienated with an unpleasant and foreboding sense of detachment from the everyday world. Fortunately, these feelings passed as I grew into my 30s and now through photography I have found a medium that allows some direct discursive connection with a more positive quasi-metaphysical outlook. A way of seeing which is couched in wonder and fascination for the effects of light, the intriguing beauty of everyday objects, nature, forms and just the ‘feeling’ of things. The combining of this sensory engagement and the technical craft of photography is one of my greatest pleasures.

I strive to create images that eloquently convey subjects as faithful sense impressions. I think I still have a way to go with this, but after all, the most effective (effecting) art comes from a certain naivety in technique.

I think it is important that we photographers remain attuned to a childlike curiosity for the world around us, where things that are inclined to be overlooked, forgotten or ignored by others remain a source of fascination and deep study.

Minor White is one of my favourite photographers from the past.
