Artist Statement Youssef Rami
BIO
Youssef Rami is a Canadian\Moroccan geometric abstractionist painter currently residing in Canada with his family. His teen years were dedicated to painting, while showing a strong interest in science, philosophy and mathematics. He moved to New York City, where he pursued his academic studies in mathematics eventually earning a graduate degree from the University of New York.
He has participated in gallery and group shows in Paris, Florida, Toronto, New York, Miami, Wisconsin and Connecticut.
Youssef’s work has been reviewed and critiqued by Toronto art critic Patrick Donahue, Prof. Laurence Bradshaw, Professor of Art at the University of Nebraska, Q Chen, a writer from S² | Silent Scribbles, and Curator, Samantha Moore from Galore gallery.
Statement
In addition to my passion for geometry and architecture, I came under the influence of the Dutch painter Piet Mondrian. I began a search for philosophical meaning through visual expression embracing cubism and geometric abstraction. In my early years, the geometric abstraction work I adopted made use of horizontal and vertical geometric patterns restricted to straight lines, squares and rectangles. . I used a palette restricted to primary colors, neutrals and monochromic. Some depicted an objective setting while others explored the complexity and interaction of basic geometric shapes with a rhythmic and geometric precision.
Recently, I focused on optical art using minimalism, “Illusion versus reality, a paradigm of the mind or a distortion of the truth”
Currently, I'm exploring an intrinsic relationship between mathematics and art, I see beauty in mathematical proofs, theorems, axioms, and corollaries themselves. My goal is to unravel and share a sense of amazement over the infinite depth and mysterious beauty and usefulness of mathematics.
