Description Among the famous people buried here are pioneers of early Penang, such as Francis Light, James Scott, Stamford Raffles' brother-in-law Quintin Dick Thomas and Reverend Hutchings who founded the Penang Free School. Many of them died of tropical fevers caused by the mass clearing of forests that originally dominated Penang. There are over 30 Chinese graves here dating back to the 1860s, believed to have belonged to Christian Hakkas who came to Penang after the Taiping Rebellion in China. There is a small doorway at the southern end of the cemetery that leads to a Roman Catholic cemetery on the other side.
