Description A huge rock in the Pacific surf at sunset on a clear April day, Marin County. Pastels cannot be mixed, just layered, so the eye has to make the color 'mixing.' This sets up a special challenge, and most pastelists can never find enough pastels, in the search to find the 'right' color.

Artist Statement Always an artist, Gretchen Jurek began lessons with great enthusiasm at the age of eight. Emphasizing art in high school and obtaining her B.A. in studio (fine) art in college were just the natural course for her life to take. Her B.A. is from UCLA.
Being required, as they were at UCLA, to learn about making jewelry, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, drawing and painting were all beneficial, and Gretchen still enjoys working in all these media. Art history was another area of study she has thoroughly embraced, and it has helped her to determine her own style.
