Description Watercolor, 11 x 15The gate at Kiyomizu Dera (Clear Water Temple), Kyoto, Japan, constructed in 1607, features a cypress-covered roof resting on eight pillars and carved chrysanthemum flowers on the wall. The elephant heads decorating the end beams are said to be brought back from Korea after Hideyoshis unsuccessful campaigns.Kiyomizu-dera, the World Heritage, was established in 778. Kiyomizu-dera was burned many times. The current temple was rebuilt in 1631 to 1633, the early Edo period. The most famous place of the temple is the Main Stage at kiyomizu. It was quoted from the Japanese old famous proverb, 'Jump off the kiyomizu stage' means going past the point of no return. The meaning is the same as 'to take the plunge'. 234 jumps were recorded, 200 survived. No data exists on wish fulfillment. The stage is cantilevered on scaffolding 50 feet over the hillside. The scaffolding is built on 139 wooden pillars without any fastener.
