Description Built among the mountainous rocks in Meteora, Greece, are several ancient monasteries where monks came for centuries to live in solitude among the mountains. The structures were built directly into towering rock peaks in the 11th century and still exist today. Here you can see the monastery, Saint Nikolaos (Nicholas) on the right in the distance, overlooking a winding road. The monasteries attract hikers, photographers and Christians to the paths leading up to these majestic structures all year long.
