Artist Statement Specializing in lifestyle imagery of people on location, Jay Watson photographs with an approach that is a cross between photo essay and environmental portraiture. He wants the images to speak to the audience as if they were out on a Sunday drive. Bodies of work such as Broken Down Heroes and Cali Life, are essays that exemplify Jay's vision and photographic style. We learn about his subjects through not just their portraits, but also in the details of their clothing, rides, and surroundings. A tattoo becomes just as important as a face. Jay studied photography and art history at UMBC in his hometown of Baltimore, MD. Some of his clients include The Source Magazine, Elemental, Dub Magazine, and Garage Magazine. In between shooting assignments, Jay teaches digital photography at The Academy of Art University. Jay is based out of San Francisco, CA where he has lived since 1999, and he is also a featured pro by Lexar Media.
