Gary Renegar Member Since May 2010 Artist Statement Artist in residence.
Artistic expression has been part of my life from an early age, whether doodling, drawing or painting, the latter endeavor catching hold in my teen years after watching a movie about Michelangelo Buonarroti which led to my fascination with the incredible artists of the Italian renaissance as well as the symmetry and beauty of the human form. After achieving some degree of success in rendering the human figure I spent a great deal of time incorporating this ability into most of my artworks. Eventually I expanded my artistic horizons further to include surrealism, this spurred by Salvador Dali et. al and their often realistic depiction of the human form as well as meticulous attention to detail in their works. Surrealism provided an expanded view of utilizing the human figure in the expression of ideas and concepts, at least in my opinion.
I carried an art minor in college as I worked toward achieving my graduate degree in psychology, not disparate disciplines to me, each contributing to the other in subtle ways. And as I spent my adult career in fields more closely aligned with my background in psychology, art was always my go to activity when the day was done, and continued to occupy my time, even as it does today.
My artistic interests expanded to include the field of landscape art, spurred on partly by the wonderful accompanying landscapes in the works of the renaissance masters, the importance of landscapes in the art of the surrealists, again most notably Dali, and eventually the wonderful Hudson River School artists in whose artistic shade I dabble. Currently my aim is to improve my ability in rendering landscapes and eventually re-incorporate figures in said landscapes. My current mediums include pencil, wash, acrylic and oil.
