Description Believed to have been taken May 3, 1863 at Camp Barry at Washington, DC, just south of the Maryland Border. I added the cloudy sky to this image, the original broken glass negative of which is at the Library of Congress. The cow moved during the estmated one second exposure. The 17th served from August 1862 to the end of the war - they were at Appomattox when Lee surrendered. A beautiful image. You can see Captain George T. Anthony directing his men, a bit more than a decade before he became governor of Kansas.
