Artist Statement I am a folk artist from the Low Country of South Carolina. I started painting at the age of six. I would watch my mother come home from sharecropping in the cotton fields and relax by drawing the life she saw around herself. My mother began to notice me sitting at her feet each time she sat down to draw and started to teach me about her wonderful world of art. I was encourage by my mother throughout the years to continue to sketch and paint the life I knew as a child and still I enjoy the life of creating art today. Expressing myself through my art and showing the hardship that the Gullah People went through to survive in the Low Country by taking next to nothing and making a living for them self and their children help me to remember my people willpower to survive and inspires me never to give up.
