Description The Navigator is part of a series of paintings I've been doing for a children's book. Although the painting looks somewhat whimsical, it's actually educational. The name of the ship is Mercator - a person who was responsible for the longtitude and latitude line of the world. He has a compass hanging off his hat, a hour glass for a chronometer, a wind vane for directions and he's holding a chart. Since Mercator was Flemish - the lion painted on the mainsail is the Flemish insignia of that era. The striped fish are pilot fish and should he become lost, the homing pigeon will take him home. Since like most of us are clowns to some degree, a clown fish tags along on his merry jaunt through the universe.
