Artist Statement Joanna is inspired by certain musicians and their music such as Birdy, especially her song 'Wings' because this song captures movement and captures emotions in motion which is what Joanna's art is all about.

Movement has always fascinated Joanna; how to capture movement yet keep it moving. With a background in theatre (HND in Performing Arts and BA in Technical Theatre), Joanna has a good understanding of movement. Certain theatre inspirations include Robert Wilson and Pina Bausch.

Joanna likes to capture a movement or an emotion in its rawest and purest form. It is that purity and rawness that really interests Joanna because in that state the motion or emotion is showing its truest nature and that is what makes it beautiful, no matter how dark or how light it is, it is presenting its truest nature and that, for Joanna, is the definition of beauty.

Joanna wishes to bring her audience into this world where motions and emotions are showing their truest nature and it is that revelation that makes them special; the good and the bad, for the bad needs to be loved and appreciated also.

Joanna believes that when certain musicians play their music a true nature of a motion or an emotion is being revealed and when a dancer is presenting a piece a true nature of a motion or an emotion is also being revealed. This is why Joanna is inspired by music and by movement.

Joanna has been painting since the age of fourteen when she received basic training and continued to teach herself. Joanna studied performing arts and with a love of movement she learnt its many forms and in due course captured them in the form or paintings.

Joanna is a director and an actor and she finds a very strong and interesting link between art and theatre. She captures the art in the theatre and the theatre in the art and combines the two.

Joanna is also a writer, of mainly poetry but she also writes for the stage. Joanna captures movement in her poetry through the form of vivid imagery.

Capturing movement in its rawest form is the basis of all of Joanna's art, whether it's theatre, paintings or poetry.
